The GIORGIO CINI FOUNDATION is a non-profit
cultural institution based on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy. It was
constituted on 20 April 1951 by Count Vittorio Cini, in memory of his
son Giorgio, with the purpose of restoring the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore and creating
an international cultural centre to re-integrate the Island into the life of Venice. The
recovery of the Island and the structural and functional rehabilitation of the historical
complex took slightly over three years. Once the buildings were brought back to their
original splendour, new facilities (lecture halls, workshops, swimming pool, gym, outdoor
theatre) were added, and the Foundation began concentrating on its cultural mission.
